Project Objectives / Description:

To provide reading materials (approximately 3,000 volumes) to Elementary School children living in the Seminyak Town (Kuta) and less developed areas in Bali. Materials will be recommended by the Badung County Public Library and then be purchased by the RC of Bali - Seminyak.

First Phase - Library Center: The Center was opened in Seminyak Elementary School in August 2005. A total of 1,300 books (picture books, easy readers, and high-interest stories regarding the family, community and the sciences) have been purchased to date.

Since the opening of the Library, which has fostered an opportunity to access quality books, the teachers have been very excited that their children are now, more than ever, learning to love reading, improving their literacy rates and improving their study skills.

Second Phase - Bookmobile: Once sufficient funds have been acquired, a Bookmobile will be purchased in order to take library books to Elementary School children in less developed areas in Bali - particularly those who do not have access to an adequate school library.

Determining the need for the Project:

Before the Project started, several members of the RC of Bali - Seminyak visited a number of Elementary Schools in the Seminyak area and spoke to their Principals concerning the need for a Library and Bookmobile. The Principals indicated that the schools in Seminyak DO NOT have separate libraries and confirmed that schools in remote areas have fewer resources at their disposal and would greatly benefit from the services of a Bookmobile.

Implementing the Project - Fund Raising:

The RC of Bali - Seminyak is working together with the Badung County Public Library regarding the ordering of materials and the day-to-day operations of the Seminyak Elementary School Library. The RC of Bali - Seminyak will be monitoring the operational performance on a quarterly basis.

The RC of Bali - Seminyak is in the process of raising the necessary funds required (see appendixes A) by applying for Matching Grants in cooperation with other Rotary Clubs and/or Rotary Districts around the world. Private Individuals and Company donations are also be solicited for the day-to-day running costs, i.e. operating the Bookmobile, paying the librarian staff & driver.
