IPP Patrick had been a very active member of RCS-B and we will all miss him.
on 3 May, the RAC of Sanur will be having a fundraising dinner and will operate some booths and are asking for gifts, raffles or vouchers.  If you have anything to offer, contact P. Anita.

GUEST  SPEAKERS
David Booth, director of East Bali Poverty Project (EBPP),  thanked the Club for giving him the opportunity to present his talk on HELPING CHILDREN TO HELP THEMSELVES and mentioned that he had been working with PP Mark since 2006.  He also thanked the Club for very generously co-sponsoring Matching Grant # 59901 for the amount of US$ $27,940.

He then introduced Nengah Ardita Adinata from Desa Ban, Kubu, Karangasem.  David then gave a brief introduction on his background, saying that he came from a very poor family and was the first in his family to have the benefit of a University education.  He knew from a very young age that he wanted to change things and went on to graduate in civil engineering and has basically been helping people ever since, not only in Indonesia but in other countries including Nigeria.  Today he is involved with the village of Desa Ban in Karangasem and to the year 2007, has spent US$ 1.3 million in efforts to improve the lives of the villagers.  David pointed out that Desa Ban is the biggest village with the biggest population, and it had taken him four years to find this village, which was at the time without water or sanitation, roads, schools, electricity or health facilities.  Illiteracy was 100%.  His mission was to eliminate illiteracy, eliminate malnutrition and promote good health.  The project is staffed by himself + 100 local Balinese.

David said it took Rp. 90 million to open up the road to the village and this was achieved with the help of RC of Bali - Taman and said that previously, there were no roads or water supplies.  He then went on to tackle health problems caused due to lack of iodine, such as goiter, skin infections, etc. and he devised a plan to improve the lives of the children by educating them in organic farming methods, in achieving a balanced diet, and about food and nutrients and vitamins.  David went on to talk about his efforts to provide safe domestic water and showed members some interesting visuals on the process involved in achieving this. 346 families have benefited from this. He is currently engaged in constructing a new reservoir for water storage.

David said that charity feeds for a day but EBPP feeds for a lifetime and amazingly, children graduating from junior high school will now be paid by the Government to teach their own parents!

David concluded his presentation saying that 'WATER IS LIFE' and asked for help to help him help more children to help themselves.

CHILDREN ARE OUR  FUTURE
