* President Kamal passed around an article on the incidence of Polio world wide and the programs aimed at eradicating polio. In 15 years the
program has reduced the incidence of paralytic polio by 99%. Only 242 cases have been reported in seven countries this year as compared to 350,000 cases in 125 in 1988 when the program began.

* DG John Karamoy visited Bali on 22 August to meet all of Presidents, Secretaries and Board Members. Some of the points he raised in the meeting were:
- Spouses/Partners are encouraged to participate in Rotary activities.
- Each club has been given the target to raise Rp 5,000,000 for the RI PolioPlus Eradication program.
- The Rotary International Conference will be held in Osaka, Japan - May, 2004. President Kamal may attend for our club.
- District Conference will be in June 2004 in Jakarta. All members are encouraged to attend !!

* Bike-A-Fund: Thanks to Rtn. Anita and IPP Patrick for helping arrange this activity last Sunday.

* A Piano Recital by PDG Jaya Suprano will be held on 25 Oct. as a fund-raising event. More details to follow.

FIRST GUEST SPEAKER (August 20)
=======================================
Robin Lim, a mid wife, from Ibu Sehat - Bayi Sehat came to Bali 11 years ago. She soon found out that one of the leading causes of death after childbirth was from post-childbirth hemorrhaging. She decided to try and do something to lower that statistic. Robin has set up a Yayasan to teach pregnant women about the importance of a healthy diet throughout their pregnancy in order to have a safe birth. A new clinic will be opened in Oct. This clinic is a co-operative and the women do not have to pay for the services. The clinic conducts lunch programs where they teach the women to eat healthily, the importance of taking vitamins, and how eating leafy green vegetables can prevent hemorrhaging during child birth. They also teach the women the importance of breast feeding. After a baby has been born, Robin or one of her staff will visit the women 6 - 8 times over a 6 week period to ensure they are healthy and the baby is thriving. The clinic needs donations like sheets, towels, plates, furniture, etc. Robin can be contacted on 972 732 / 081 7975 7522.

SECOND GUEST SPEAKER (August 20)
=======================================
David Gordon came to the Club to speak about the problem of drug addiction and the spread of diseases such as Hepatitis and HIV. David and his wife Joyce started Yayasan Harapan Permata Hati Kita - an addiction, recovery and community centre. David moved from California to Bali in 1996, he is a former drug addict and has also worked in drug and alcohol rehabilitation centres. He saw a need for a rehabilitation centre here in Indonesia due to the high usage of drugs. In 1996 - 97, 50% of drug users were using needles. The most popular drug was heroin and then methamphetamine. There are approx. 4 million addicts in Indonesia and this has led to an increase in diseases such as HIV and Hepatitis C.
The recovery centre allows addicts to detox and share their experience with people who have been through the same process. The centre is self
funded. David and Joyce are now working on a project with Rotary to Train teachers on substance abuse, addiction, HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis.Already in Jakarta 120 teachers have been trained and 28 will be trained in the first program to be run in Bali at the end of August in conjunction with The RC of Jakarta - Selatan, RC of Bali - Seminyak and RC of Bali - Jimbaran.

There is no cost to the teachers participating and the objectives are:

1. Have basic awareness of drug use, abuse, addiction, HIV and Hepatitis C among the young.
2. Have basic understanding of how to identify students with drug problems.
3. Have basic skills in helping students with problems related to addiction, HIV and Hepatitis C and knowledge about intervening with
drug abuse problems at school.
4. Have sufficient skills to teach other teachers at their own school about substance abuse, HIV and Hepatitis C.

HIV / DRUG TRAINING PROGRAM
=======================================
Rtn.Veronika informed the club about the success of the first drug awareness training program. 27 teachers from 10 different schools attended.

The teachers who attended included:
- Student counsellors.
- Teachers in charge of the student activities.
- Teachers in charge of the student organizations.

The program was a GREAT SUCCESS and all of the teachers felt they had learned valuable information which they can pass onto their students and fellow teachers. The teachers made various action plans and one school plans on holding a 'testimony day' and inviting an ex-user to come to the school and give information to the students on the danger of using drugs.

Rotaractors from RAC Sanur are going to also assist in producing brochures, stickers and flyers related to drug abuse prevention.

GUEST SPEAKER (August 27)
=======================================
Rtn. Eka Ginting (RC of Jakarta - Sentral) from Indo.com informed the members of the following statistics following the Bali and Jakarta bombs.

Who is currently travelling to Bali?
26 - 30 yrs.: numbers are down by 50%
51 yrs. +: numbers are up by 60%

The Australian and British markets were weakened the most. American, German and Japanese remained steady and Singapore and Malaysian have strengthened.

More people are booking closer to their arrival dates. 1-2 night bookings have increased by 20%.

The impact on Bali following the Jakarta bomb was a 40% decrease in hotel bookings.

Ever wonder about those people who say they want, or are giving more than 100%?

We have all met these people, or been to those meetings, where someone wants more than 100%. So how would you like to be able to give 103%, or even 118%?

Here's a little math that might prove useful. What it takes to give 100% and more!

If:

So, it stands to reason that
¬ hard work and knowledge will get you close,
¬ attitude will get you there,
¬ but you need bull___ to give more than 100%.

So Bull S___ is OK, but look how much farther A__ Kissing will take you:

We all knew this was true, and now we have mathematical proof.

Pass this round at your next meeting when they ask for more than 100%.
After all it is mathematical proof.
